Installing Drupal on Ubuntu Server on Virtual PC

I hope the title describes the objective clearly enough. There's a justification of my personal choice of technologies here.

There were quite a few hurdles along the way and I tripped over most of them, but I picked myself up, dusted myself down, went back and took a harder run up and now I have a lovely working system. It's terrible how the tiniest things can take the longest time. For months the search box on this site was visible in Firefox but not in Internet Explorer 6 and 7. It's a tale of stacking context and z-index that concluded a few minutes ago. Not that I worked exclusively on this problem for the entire duration.

Drupal 6.2 first impressions

I've persevered with Drupal because the evangelical praise from its disciples convinced me there must be something in it that I was just too stupid to see.
